On June 19, 2011, the Men’s Health Initiative supported National Men’s Health Month by participating in the Gary Papa Father’s Day Prostate Cancer Awareness 5k in Philadelphia.
Gary Papa was a Philadelphia newscaster who succumbed to prostate cancer in 2009. He was a staple in every local home serving as a sportscaster and co-host of Primetime Weekend, a local public affairs news program. He announced on-air he was undergoing chemotherapy for prostate cancer in 2004. He battled the disease for 5 years, which is a testament to his strength and bravery. Needless to say, June 19, 2009 was a sad day for Philadelphia.
Every year, on June 19, a 5k run is held in tribute to Gary Papa’s legacy, to raise awareness on prostate cancer, and to raise funds to support prevention and treatment research on the deadly disease. This year’s Gary Papa tribute activities were a complete success enlisting hundreds of supports and raising hundreds of thousands of dollars. Please visit here to get more information on the event and on how you can help for next year.
The Men’s Health Initiative’s primary goal is to reach out to whichever population it can, whenever, wherever, in whatever fashion to help raise awareness on men’s health topics and contribute to the elimination of threats to male health and wellness.
